TRAVEL IDEAS WANTED: Solo female looking for outdoor travel adventure ideas? Hi there! Hoping to draw on the experience of all you travellers out there!! I'm located in Canada but am open to travel in many parts of the world. I'm looking for a fun, flexible, & memorable adventure to do by myself this year. In the past I've hiked through Ireland, kayaked in BC. To give you an idea of what I'm looking for, it would meet the following criteria: - 7-10 days - outdoor adventure - safe (i.e. no threat of being eaten alive by mountain lions because I'm travelling alone, or raped because I'm a woman travelling alone) - physical (hiking, cycling etc..) - inexpensive (open to camping, hostels, & inexpensive hotels etc) - potential for cultural exposure - not too much prep/research required - travel months either July, Sept-December this year Look forward to hearing from you!
NOLS' cheaper alternative adventure/ outdoor leadership school? Do you know of other outdoor leadership schools like NOLS (http://www.nols.edu), but cheaper? Or any outdoor leadership program? Adventure school? I have recently trekked with a Pakistani school The Adventure Foundation (http://adventurefoundation.org.pk/), they are very affordable, but limited to Pakistan/Nepal/China only. Please recommend schools or adventure groups. It'll be great if I can travel while VOLUNTEERING so do suggest if you know one of those programs. Thanks.
The best place to travel to in South America? I want to travel to a city or town in South America that offers some good outdoor recreation/adventure, like whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, anything along those lines. Where should I go?
What is a good Australian travel/tour company? I'm planning on going on a trip to Australia for a week sometime in summer or fall of 2008, and am trying to find a good company to purchase a tour from. I'm single and in my early twenties, so I'm not really looking for a family-type vacation. I'd like something with some level of adventure to it. I like a lot of outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and boating, as well as going to parties and bars. Does anyone know a travel company or website that offers some kind of tour? Or should I just buy a plane ticket and plan my own vacation?
What do i do if i am on the career path to be a nurse but all i dream about is working at a winter ski park? I am a sensible child I do what my mother wants. I'm a family oriented person. I want the good life. I want to be a nurse, but i have steped into the wreckless life of outdoor seasonal work bums by being a raft guide for two summers in a row. It has taught me a lot about money management and life in general, but i can't stop wishing i was back there or somewhere up north trying to be a ski instructor or out west working on a ranch. My original plan was to be a travel nurse, work 9 months out of the year and spend the other three indulging in my outdoor adventures, but i don't know anymore.
What to do in the Englewood, Florida area? My wife and I are travelling to Englewood, Florida May 1-8, 2008 for a vacation. What is there to do in that area? I'd like to see a race if possible (car or motorcycle) and I like outdoor/adventure type activities. I'm willing to drive about 3 hours one way max. Don't suggest Disney World....that's not for me. I realize it's probably not exactly the "centre of the action" but we're getting a free stay at her parent's condo so.... We will have a rental car to drive to attractions.

External frame backpack for kayak camping? I originally posted this in "Outdoor Recreation," but decided it should probably be here in "Camping" instead...? I'm planning several kayak camping adventures this summer, from overnight to about 4-5 days. There will be some portaging involved, and I saw somewhere how an external frame backpack can be utilized cleverly to portage a kayak above your head with minimal strain to shoulders and back. But I'm wondering how cumbersome such a backpack would be to stash inside the kayak while paddling. I'll be padding to different locations each day, so don't have the option of just leaving it behind at camp for the day. I'll be solo mostly, so need to make sure I'm planning for the most efficient way to travel & pack. Should I consider buying an external frame backpack? Suggestions?
Can someone help me correct the punctuation and grammar of my short story? Thanks in advance.? The independent spirit that at one time shaped this nation with its “can-do” mind set still lives today. It was my heritage of this philosophy and my own “know-it-all” attitude that taught me a life lesson in the importance of following instructions. Not to mention furnishing me with some practical experiences in the various types, characteristics, and cleanup techniques of paint. My troubles began when my parents traveled out of town for the day and I decided to surprise them by painting my bedroom while they were gone. The color of the paint in the old can I found in the garage was a creamy white; just what I wanted for my bedroom walls. I opened the can, and proceeded to brush the paint on the first wall. After about ten minutes my eyes began to burn and my sinuses started swelling. Something was wrong. There was an irritating gaseous vapor coming from the paint on the wall. Then it struck me, maybe I should have read the instructions on the label before I started. I finally discovered the answer to my problem when I read out loud the instructions on the warning label, “DANGER! TOXIC: OUTDOOR USE ONLY,” I should have read this first, not that it changed anything at this point of my fiasco. However, I learned a lesson that I would never forget, read the instructions first. My next problem compounded the first. The paint would have to completely dry before it quit emitting fumes. However, two hours later the sticky mess was as wet as ever and showed no signs of drying. Another quick look at the label through my watery burning eyes revealed the words “Drying time twenty-four hours.” I was sunk; my parents would be home in a couple of hours to an unlivable house. Panicking, I tried to wipe the paint off the wall, but it stuck like chewing gum on the bottom of a shoe. There was no way I could get it off no matter how frantically I tried. My second lesson was also the result of not reading the instructions, if I had read them I would have discovered how long the paint took to dry before starting my ill adventure. I finally gave up on cleaning the wall. Waiting for my approaching fate, I decided to clean up my hands, face, and hair which were smeared with wet paint. Unfortunately soap and water would not remove the oily mess; it was stuck on me like a cheap tattoo and no amount of scrubbing would budge it from my skin. My heart sank not only had I destroyed the house I had also cream colored myself for life. “Oh Lord,” I exclaimed “What am I going to do now?” Another look at the instructions and I found out that there was something called paint thinner required to remove this particular paint. This brought me to another lesson found in the instructions, not all paints can be cleaned with soap and water. Mistakes are a hard way to learn. Fortunately, my parents were in an understanding mood when they discovered my catastrophe. From that dreadful day on, I have tried to look carefully before I leap, which includes reading instructions. Furthermore, I make it a practice to avoid toxic omitting paints; slow drying paints and paints that do not clean up with soap and water, with all the revulsion my once independent spirit can muster. I am not an ELS student and I have not had it checked. I am just guessing on the punctuation.

Study Abroad: Valdivia, Chile or Buenos Aires, Argentina? I am going to study abroad this spring. My two affordable options are either Valdivia, Chile or Buenos Aires, Argentina. Both have such different things to offer. I was wondering if anyone had advice on what they think would be a good choice. I want to be able to have travel adventures, learn Spanish, and meet wonderful, kind people. I would like to do some extreme outdoor activities and learn a lot about the culture. Both of these places have a lot to offer, but I am so indecisive that I am having a hard time choosing. Any information would be so helpful. Thank you :) Happy travels :D
