cheap european vacations Knowledge Base
What's the cheapest way to take a European vacation? I'm assuming most answers will say "to backpack," but I'm wanting tips on how to get around, where to stay, what to do for fun, etc...I want to take a month-long trip for very, very cheap. Thanks for your ideas!
Potential expense of a cross-European vacation? I just obtained my US Passport a couple of days ago and I'm absolutely ITCHING to leave the continent. I've been to both Canada and Mexico (as well as the Carribean), but never overseas. If it's feasible financially, I would love to take a month off and fly out to Paris (or maybe somewhere else a bit less romantically idealistic) and take modest means of transportation to a few/several European countries within a fairly close proximity. The obvious hindering factor, of course, being monetary. For a 3 or 4 week European escapade, realistically how much am I looking at going through if I'm budgeting airfare, food, lodging (preferably cheap hostels or something of that nature), public transportation, and such? Anyone in these forums actually done it?
How much would a European vacation cost? I'm planning to go in Autumn of 2009, after I graduate college/university. Now I want to go to Europe for two weeks. I planned to go to France for a month, but I know that is unrealistic for me since I have work and another school again, etc. Anyway I wanted to go to for 4 different countries in one to two weeks. I'm planning Paris, Berlin, Barcelona and either Rome or Zurich. Now how much would all this cost me or does anyone know any good sites for this. I don't really care for a hotel and if I have to a very cheap one. Please help! Oh and I'd be coming from Toronto, Canada. I'd be going around mid to end October. I'm not going to shop or buy anything crazy. Just good food and sights. Thank you in advance!

What are some good tour groups for a European vacation? I'm thinking of going to Europe with a friend. We kind of want to do everything, so we're trying to find a good cheap tour group. Or if anyone knows of any tour groups just in Ireland or Sweden, that's great too. Any links would be helpful. Thanks!
Cheap transportation options in Europe? Say I wanted to see Venice(Italy), Salzburg or Vienna(Austria), Munich(Germany), and Zurich(Switzerland)? (I tried to fit 4 countries that loop around somewhat, then back to Venice). What are my best options? How slow in the bus? I saw the eurorail was faster, but definitely more money. My husband & I(under age 26) will have 2 weeks to visit Europe. Any better travel routes and cities than I came up with? I just want us to see alot without being too rushed. I want it to be romantic, adventurous, relaxed, etc. I open for suggestions for our European vacation. Thanks!!!

Looking for European Air Passes for EU / UK citizen. Any ideas? I have searched the web for european air passes and find that most of them are only available to citizens outside europe. I have some vacation soon and want to visit a few places. This seems to be the cheapest way to do it, but I do not qualify as I am British. Does anyone know of any EU air passes available for me?
How about some politician adopting this stance on illegal aliens? 1. Reinforce U.S. borders to stop illegal immigration & terrorist infiltrations. 2. Refuse non-U.S. trucks(unsafe) & non-U.S truckers(-low $) in this nation. ( Help U.S. truckers to have jobs! ) 3. Refuse citizenship & residency to ALL who are here illegally & who are avoiding the proper legal procedures. 4. Fine AND publish the names of U.S. employers of illegal aliens (- so the public can refuse them business). 5. Help support investment, increases in living standards & alternative employment in countries where these workers are coming from. 6. Instead of cheap tuition for illegals, help U.S. citizens with college costs : some illegals seem to get cheaper education than U.S. citizens! 7. Support safety, education & tourism in Mexico, central america, etc. -- Lots of U.S.,Canadian & western European citizens would love to vacation there if it becomes safer & less corrupt. 8. Jail corrupt politicians, not border agents. 9. City by city searches for illegals. addendum to 8, above. -- More people going there means more jobs for them so they can afford to live in their own lands!
Is it possible to try to get my girlfriend back? How can I show her I've changed I'm worthy of asecond chance? We split up last Friday a week ago tonight at 10 PM we got in an argument. I am 20 years old and she is 23. We are both in college. We have been together for 3 months. We are from different cultures though I'm European descent and she is Asian descent. We have fought a few times before over the most minor of things like me drinking juice without asking her. I have never been unfaithful and try hard to please her. She says the reason we are going to break up has to do with my personality not another guy. She says I am selfish, cheap, and mean inside. I want to change to get her back and be a better man. She was basically watching her laptop before we went to bed for about 3.5 hours. I was watching it with her. Problem is that there isn't a desk or chair in her room so it gets uncomfy after awhile. I told her she hasn't spent any time talking to me since she came back from Winter Vacation. I asked her to stop watching the show and asked her if there was another guy. She started shout
Any recommendations for flight itineraries to/within Europe from the USA? We want to vacation from San Francisco to Copenhagen this summer. I've heard it's cheaper to fly from the USA to a major European hub (London, Paris, etc) and then catch a smaller intra-Europe flight to a smaller European city (Copenhagen, Prague, etc) vs. trying to fly direct from the US. Does anyone have experience with this or any recommendations for intra-Europe carriers? I've checked options on Yahoo! Travel, Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, etc but they are all pretty US-centric and still quite expensive.
non-touristy vacation spots? Im looking to find international places to visit that are still relatively cheap and generally safe but not over-run with tourists. Beautiful beaches, quaint towns, doesnt matter. Just not the norm bahamas, carribean, and major European cities. (this is actually for school) :] thanks.
What are the best/cheapest European sites to see? Planning a vacation to Europe next year with a couple of friends. Being in our mid-20's we would like visit areas that will not only be scenic and culturally/historically unforgettable, but also offer a fun night-life. Please help with any experiences or ideas you may have!
What's the best European vacation spot in January? My family and I are trying to decide where to vacation this January. Our choices (so far) are London, Edinburgh, Rome, Munich or Paris. The tickets to Munich are about $250 cheaper to Munich, but I don't know about the cost once we get there. So, I'm basically looking for a place that will have lots to do, be easy to get around, and not be super expensive once we get there. Do any of these places stand out over the others? Thanks

"The british are assholes" Look what I read in the news!? By SARAH LYALL Published: August 23, 2008 MALIA, Greece — Even in a sea of tourists, it is easy to spot the Britons here on the northeast coast of Crete, and not just from the telltale pallor of their sun-deprived northern skin. Phil Harris/Mirrorpix An injured British tourist lay by a curb on a recent weekend after a fight in Malia, Greece. The New York Times British tourists have caused havoc at the Malia resort. They are the ones, the locals say, who are carousing, brawling and getting violently sick. They are the ones crowding into health clinics seeking morning-after pills and help for sexually transmitted diseases. They are the ones who seem to have one vacation plan: drinking themselves into oblivion. “They scream, they sing, they fall down, they take their clothes off, they cross-dress, they vomit,” Malia’s mayor, Konstantinos Lagoudakis, said in an interview. “It is only the British people — not the Germans or the French.” Malia is the latest and currently most notorious in a long list of European resorts full of young British tourists on packaged tours offering cheap alcohol and a license to behave badly. In Magaluf and Ibiza, Spain; in Ayia Napa, Cyprus; and in the Greek resorts of Faliraki, Kavos and Laganas as well as Malia, the story is the same: They come, they drink, they wreak havoc. “The government of Britain has to do something,” Mr. Lagoudakis said. “These people are giving a bad name to their country.” They are also hurting themselves in the process. A recent report published by the British Foreign Office, “British Behavior Abroad,” noted that in a 12-month period in 2006 and 2007, 602 Britons were hospitalized and 28 raped in Greece, and that 1,591 died in Spain and 2,032 were arrested there. The report did not distinguish between medical cases and arrests associated with drunkenness and those that had nothing to do with it. But it did say that “many arrests are due to behavior caused by excessive drinking.” So it would seem. Reports of scandalous incidents rumble on regularly here and elsewhere, helping to cement Britain’s reputation as the largest exporter of inebriated hooligans in Europe. Earlier this summer, flying home to Manchester from the Greek island of Kos, a pair of drunken women yelling “I need some fresh air” attacked the flight attendants with a vodka bottle and tried to wrestle the airplane’s emergency door open at 30,000 feet. The plane diverted hastily to Frankfurt, and the women were arrested. In Laganas, on the Greek island of Zakinthos, where a teenager from Sheffield died after a drinking binge this summer, more than a dozen British women were charged in July with prostitution after taking part, the authorities said, in an alfresco oral sex contest. More alarmingly, a 20-year-old British tourist partied with her sister and a friend into the early hours in Malia also in July, then returned to her hotel room and — although she had denied being pregnant — gave birth. Her companions say they returned later to find the baby dead; she has been charged with infanticide. And in Dubai, also this summer, a British man and woman who met during a drinking bout were arrested and charged with having sex on a beach, after repeatedly shouting abuse at a police officer who ordered them to stop. All of which leads to a natural question: Why? “I think that in their country, they are like prisoners and they want to feel free,” said Niki Pirovolaki, who works in a bakery on Malia’s main street and often encounters addled Britons heading back to their hotels — “if they can remember where they are staying,” she said. David Familton, a Briton who works in a club here, said that it was a question of emotional comfort. “It’s because of British culture — no one can relax, so they become inebriated to be the people they want to be,” he said. Worried about the increase in crimes and accidents afflicting drunken tourists, the British consulate in Athens has begun several campaigns, using posters, beach balls and coasters with snappy slogans, to encourage young visitors to drink responsibly. “When things do go wrong, they go wrong in quite a big way,” said Alison Beckett, the director of consular services. “What we’re trying to do here is reduce some of these avoidable accidents where they have so much to drink that they fall off balconies and are either killed or need huge operations.” What do you reckon?
