What kind of accomodation is suitable for a travel group?

If we're going in a group, wouldn't it be better to rent a house?
Then we can share the rent. We're numerous.
We're travelling in France, Italy for 12 days.
Or should we stay in hostels?

1. It sounds like you won't be staying in one city for a very long period of time and it's hard to rent a house (esp. if it's high season) for less than a week's time, but it can't hurt to try.
