How do I organize group travel?

Me and a friend would like to travel together but I am not quite sure on the specific details on booking flights and accommodation.

How would we book the flight, so we would be on the same flight with our seats adjacent?

The first thought in mind is to book both of us on the same itinerary but my credit card does not have a limit high enough to buy two tickets. Unless we can use both our credit cards on the same itinerary/booking? Or would we just book it seperately on the same flight and pay extra fees to select our seat in advance?

Do I have to worry about this on VIA rail? Or do people just select their own seats?

And for hotels? Can you pay with two credit cards?

This is also a curiosity for me because I work at a tourist attraction and I have never heard of the ability to process multiple payments (credit cards) until I started working there so I wonder if that is a universal rule since I have customers that already assume I can.

1. it may be different depending on airline, but for most (if not ALL) american airlines, you can select seating during booking process, up until actual checking-in (you can change seating AT check-in)

and of course, its not too big of a hassle to ask people to swap seats once youre on an aircraft, so thats no big deal

most rails ive been on, there is only coach/general seating where you can sit anywhere. on some rails there are also higher-class seats, and these are reserved.

hotels should allow you to split payment across 2 cards. have not encountered airline purchase that does this, though
