Outside Reykjavik and local settlements the roads are mainly gravel. However the volume of traffic is virtually nil (when compared to most of the UK).

We have driven (5 occasions as tourists) in various places without trouble.

Going in one of their Big wheel 4x4's is REAL adventure!

Also try a snowmobile on the glacier in the South East, that is REALLY SCARY adventure when you go up the steep sides!
