How can my mother in law travel to be with us after the birth of our child?

My wife is due in late Jan, and we don't want to have to pay an enormous amount of money to buy a same day airline ticket.

Are there any airlines which are known to facilitate last minute travel for medical (specifically childbirth) reasons for immediate family members?
