Why does it cost more to travel if you are a single? Hotels for singles are cheaper than for two.?

I am single and want to go on a tour. But they charge much more if you are single. But if I walk into a hotel and get a room it costs less than if I am with another person. There is something wrong here.

1. Most hotels, certainly outside Europe, charge by the room and Tour Operators divide the cost between two people to price their packages. If you're travelling alone naturally you have to pick up the cost for the other half of the room. Quite a few European hotels charge per person and you'd get a smaller room as a single. Single rooms don't exist in most of the world and are disappearing everywhere.

2. Though single still occupy the whole room. Share it with a stranger. A little uncomfortable, but will get used to it.
