1. Yes, of course you can. You just need to exercise the same kinds of street-smarts you would in NYC or LA... don't get too relaxed or let your guard down just because you are on vacation.
But it isn't the dark ages. Spain is nice and modern and women aren't enslaved or anything. It isn't like travelling to a fundamentalist Islamic country (which is extremely dangerous if not impossible for a woman alone).
2. holaaaaaaaa, of course
A survey in 18 countries of the UE sample that Spain is the country with smaller rate of delinquency
Spain is the country of the European Union that registers a smaller rate of common crimes, in agreement with the results of a telephone survey, coordinated by Gallup, to 40,000 citizens in 18 States members on its experience with the crime. Only 9% of the Spaniards interviewed assured to have been victims of crimes common in 2004, number that a reduction of more represents of 50% with respect to the 1989 data, and which it allows that Spain has in the last fallen years of the first one to the last position of the ranking.
Ireland, United Kingdom, Estonia, Denmark and the Netherlands head the classification, since around 20% of the encuestados ones in the five countries they in the last denounce to have undergone directly common crimes year.
3. of course, a woman can travel alone in spain, i do it often because i´m living here alone the rest of my family lives in germany.
4. I haven't travelled alone in Spain, but I went with a group last fall & my experience was that if you speak Spanish, you'll be fine. If you don't speak Spanish, you'd better learn before you go, because unlike the rest of Western Europe & thanks to Franco, English hasn't been routinely taught in Spanish schools & isn't as widely spoken, even in the tourist industry (i.e., hotels, restaurants, etc.) as it is in other countries on the Continent.
