Where is the best place for a vacation in East Cost (USA)?

I have a couple of days off (4 days to be exact) at the end of September and I'm thinking of where to go. I'll be travelling alone and I really like historical places and adventure. I'd appreciate any advise from you guys!

1. If you like history you should start in Boston. Boston's history is rich. There are also several surrounding areas, like Concord, which have battle sites and museums that might interest you. Salem is a day trip from there too. Honestly, you could do all 4 days in Boston and never be bored. Catch a Sox game at historical Fenway (you can tour it too).

2. How about northern New England where the leaves will be changing to beautiful colors. It'll be great place to spend four days.

3. How 'bout Gettysburg, Pennsylvania?

4. I think that Washington, DC is an excellent candidate for your vacation. History is obvious, because it contains many historical buildings, many stories and memorials, both inside the city and outside (Mt. Vernon, for example).

The city has world class museums, a fantastic arrays of monuments, a thriving nightlife scene, great restauarants, interesting and historic neighborhoods. And at the end of September there are not many tourists here, so you don't have to deal with the crush!

5. Washington DC would be the ideal spot for historical places to go also Williamsburg VA.

7. Ok, 4 days is a lot of time to do a city. You want a region. End of September... Leaves might be starting to change up north in the hills.

I'm going to suggest Acadia National Park in Maine. Lots of great restaurants (lobster), boat excursions (whales and puffins), and seafaring history. The hiking and drives should be very nice up there that time of year.
