When was the FIRST Time YOU traveled ... Alone?
... It began at age 8, flying to Molokai or Kauai for summer vacation, with relatives...it was an adventure & always exciting!
mergirl: wasnt it an adventure, how odd,
12yrs later after my first flight to Molokai, I landed at San Diego Airport...wow!!!
Cheryl P: weren't you excited, swimming,
walking and doing it by yourself, gutsy, bet you wouldn't let your kids do it, now!
Thank YOU, both for sharing your experience with Us.

1. 19 on an airplane to San Diego.
2. Does walking to my grandmother's which included swimming across the Cape May canal solo at eight count?
If not, then I guess about 40, flew to Maine alone when my dad had a stroke.
I wouldn't even let my GROWN kids swim the canal now!
3. Nine years old I think. Took a train to Boston to see the Brooklyn Dodgers take on the Boston Braves at Braves Field.
4. 13, flying to Jersey, here where I live
5. I used to take my dads check to the bank as a child. Does that count. Walked downtown to do it. Probably about a mile.
Other than that as an adult I used to drive 300 miles with my baby to see my husband at an army base. I was 18-19
6. It depends on what you mean by traveled. My parents have an old 8 mm film of me packing up my "car" (one of those old enclosed metal contraptions with the foot pedals) with my pillow, pennies and peanut butter and heading for the woods. I'm told I was found perfectly content eating peanut butter dipped mushrooms alongside a creek with my pup. I had no idea I was missing until my dad got his hands on my backside! Allegedly, I was seven miles away from home. I was four. They didn't know when they recorded the home movie that I was seriously running away. I still smile at the memory.
7. I was twenty-seven, a single mother and I could finally afford a real vacation. I rented a car, mine was a junker, and took my children to Colo. from southern Calif. to visit an old friend and my brothers. I left with $300 and got home with $5. I drove straight though and cat napped in rest areas. It was great!
8. I was 14. I'm from Australia and I went to America for 3 months.
9. The lady that raised me started getting a little crazy when I was about 11 so I would get on the bus and go to San Francisco and people watch.................. At first I would just ride the bus to the city then back again.......little by little I got brave and would get off the bus for a hour or two until I would spend the whole day there......Then when I was 13 I toke the bus to South Lake Tahoe by myself.......
10. The first time I made a trip on my own was by (railroad) steam engine and it was 1966 from PA to OH to meet my bf.
11. I was 18 the first time I traveled alone. After I had been inducted into the army almost a year after my graduation from highschool.
My destination was Anniston, Alabama. And I flew from
Portland, Oregon to Chicago for a layover. Then to
Atlanta, Georgia, and the last aircraft I traveled in was what
they called the "puddle jumper". I believe it seated 12 pass-
engers. With six people on each side of the plane. It had
propellers on both sides and we had to climb up steps from
the tarmack to board. It was a plane used as a business mans' shuttle. Judging by the men in warm suits and brief
cases on that hot summer day. I remember we dropped down after hitting several air pockets and we'd drop in elevation and go back up again. Only to drop another time
or two again. During this time, soft drinks were served
and I hit the edge of the bottle against one of my front
teeth, and thought I was surely going to knock that tooth
out, from the hard impact it took. I waited to finish my
soft drink after we were flying without the wind turbulance,
and was glad I had. The rest of the trip was managed in an
army bus. And I enjoyed being on solid ground once again.
12. My grandmother was returning from the USA to England on the SS United States and was due to dock at 0730 on 13th April 1956, my 12th birthday, I was sent to meet her, I caught the night train to London some 100 miles away from my hometown of Nottingham , On reaching London I made my way across the city to Victoria station I think it was and caught the early morning train to Southampton. I walked the several miles from the station to the dockside and waited till the boat docked, of all the hundreds of people getting off the boat I saw my grandmother, I was not aware that the trains actually went to the dock side, however, we returned home none the worse for my adventure. What would the authorities have to say if it was attempted today?
13. Went by train about 1200 miles from Atlanta to Princeton at 16.
14. I lead a very sheltered life; I was 32 and separating from my first husband...
15. I was 10 [1952]- flew from New Jersey to Ohio to spend summer with my grandparents. I got all dressed up [as we did back then] and ended up sitting next to a young G.I. who offered me A CIGARETTE! LOL. Now I was a mature kid, but gimme a break!
16. When I was 18 yrs. old I drove from L.A. to Oklahoma City by myself and had $52.00!! Of course gas was about .30 a gallon and had 20 bucks in my pocket when I got home and a pocket full of bennies!!!
17. I was about 13, but I only traveled about 7 miles from my home into Nottingham City center, but it certainly felt like a huge adventure to me, I was very nervous but very exited at the same time, I went to buy some suitable clothes for my school trip to Austria in 1966 (I was in Austria when England won the world cup that year) sorry for digressing...I had to do this alone as my Mam was ill and Dad was at work...I will never forget that little adventure...thing is, I got into soooo much trouble when I got home as I blew all the money on 1 item...a fur coat!!...well it is cold in Austria!!! Dad made take it back and buy some sensible things, jumpers and anoraks, the spoilsport.....lol
18. My sister and I flew alone from Phoenix, Arizona to Providence, Rhode Island, where we were in school. We were returning to school after Christmas vacation. That was in 1960. I was 17 then, she was 14. By alone, I mean unaccompanied by adults.
19. 16 or 17 , travelling to my aunt's in Washington DC. My seatmate's father worked for one of the big networks, we had a blast , she told me alot of good places to go and see in DC that the tourists might not always know about .
I enjoy travelling alone , I find you meet alot more people that way than if you are travelling with friend(s).
