where can I find info on train travel through africa?

I want to travel from Cape Town to Cairo and need info regarding visas, train fair, and anything that could assist me with the planning of such a trip. I'm trying to avoid the beaten track, but other than the luxury trains, very little seems to be available. ps Anyone want to join me?

1. I don't think there is a train that goes from Cape to Cairo.
But this is cool.

2. For your East African leg of the journey, you can travel by train from Mombasa to Nairobi in Kenya if you choose to cross over to Mombasa from Tanzania to check out the great beaches.

The price is very reasonable, check out the prices in the link below:

If you're travelling through Zimbabwe, there is a train from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls (on the border with Zambia) but bookings sometimes need to be made way in advance. Perhaps it's better to travel by bus from Joburg to Lusaka (Zambia's capital) then onto Tanzania.

In Tanzania most buses aren't allowed to travel at night (in order to reduce the number of accidents) so you should factor that in.

Apparently you don't need a visa for Kenya but to make sure you can call the embassy in Pretoria:

Don't forget about Malaria medication.

Good Luck!!!
