How much will it cost (approximately) to travel the world for six months?

Am contemplating taking time to travel (with my s.o.) the world for six months but not sure how much it will cost. Would like to hit every continent (except Australia/NZ and North America b/c have already seen most of that). Am not a huge fan of backpacking/hostel'ing, but don't need to stay in luxury hotels all the time either. Will probably try and mix it up between staying in nicer places and more serviceable places and have a decent amount of money saved up. Does anyone have thoughts on approx. how much I should budget for this? Also not sure if it will be easier to take several separate trips (and return home for a little bit in between) or one long continuous trip - any thoughts on this also?

1. Well I worked out a rough schedule this is how it would be.
The cost would be approxitemately $24,000, most of it will be on gas.
Travel North America by train, or bus.
In South America take the Liberator's Route (bus route) to visit 6 countries. Fly from Rio De Janiero to South Africa.
Tour safer parts of Africa by plane and car.
Fly from Cairo to Spain, go north through the Ardennes to France, take the Eurostar to United Kingdom or continue into Europe.
From Germany or Poland go to Moscow, Russia.
From Moscow Russia take the Trans-Siberian Express to Vladivostok.
And you should be in your last continent.

2. I have done some research into taking my own trip around for 6 months and it would cost roughly $30,000. It really depends on how your going to get there, where your going to stay, and what your going to do when you get there. It really adds up fast. And there is always some unexpected expense that comes up. And really no matter what the cost, its worth it. Because life is too short and their are so many places to see.
