2. You did not mention if your group is a mixed company group or if you are all male/female. So, I am going to assume you are all female as women would be more likely to be concerned about this than men.

Cancun is a very large tourist destination with all of the issues that come with that. As long as you stay in a group, or at least with one other person, and in "tourist" areas, you should not have any issues with locals. Taking basic precautions like carrying a money belt or locking the majority of your cash in the safe in your hotel room should be taken just as if you were traveling in the US or any other larger city. There is no need for expensive flashy jewelry and it should be left at home like any other trip. Things like drinking excessively will significantly increase the risk factor - in part because people make poor decisions when they drink. They also make easier targets.

I would say the biggest risk to a group of 18 year olds would be sun poisoning, too much alcohol, too little water and disappointment if they are looking to experience the "real" Mexico in Cancun. It is not the kind of place where street muggings or rapes happen without the influence of lots of alcohol.

Bottom line is Cancun is a tourist zone. As long as they don't drink the water or eat salad in a smaller restaurant an use some common sense, a group of 18 year olds should be fine.
