Why do single people who travel in Australia get punished for being single and charged for 2 in hotels?

1. They don't get punished - there are single rates and double rates. I think someone saw you coming!!!!

2. The problem is that they are taking up a room that could be sold to two people for double the price. If they want their own room they need to offer the same money as two would (= double-occupancy rate).

3. most hotels in Australia and New Zealand have a room rate, not just the person rate so if there is one, two or three of you you would be paying the same rate - for the actual room not number of beds...

4. I very much doubt that you would get charged for 2 people - it would be a room rate and the more people in it the less it would be for you. This is not a punishment - it is normal accommodation practices.

5. Single people don't 'get punished'. Hotels build rooms designed for 2 guests. If only one guest stays in a room, that leaves an empty bed and the hotel loses. If you were at a restaurant by yourself and ordered the rack of lamb for two would you expect the waiter to charge you half the price just because you scarfed it down by yourself?

On the up side, some hotels actually offer 'single' rooms designed for only one person. These rooms are often significantly smaller than standard room, and they might not have the best location in the hotel, but the are noticably cheaper. When making reservations call or email the hotel about single rooms and rates, before committing to a reservation.
